Travel GuideVenice & Veneto
Venice & Veneto
Overshadowed by the floating city, Veneto also exudes romance and beauty. That is why William Shakespeare chose the city of Verona as the stage for the greatest love story. The Mediaeval environment and the remains of the ancient city-states are still very much present in Veneto’s cities, as well as art, especially Giotto’s frescoes in Padua and Palladio’s architecture in Vicenza. Did you know that the famous city of Venice evolved from people escaping the wars on the mainland? It was this escape that gave rise to one of the prettiest and most romantic cities in the world. Built over the sea, this city goes far beyond all the photos, paintings and films that you’ve seen of the city and offers you an unforgettable experience. The streets, decorated with prolific, Renaissance architecture are proof that its history is still cause for pride, while the canals paint a unique nautical atmosphere. Whilst the city of Venice beautifies the northern part of the Adriatic Sea, Veneto watches it from the other side of the sea. A large part of Veneto’s territory was once part of the powerful Republic of Venice, which dominated the eastern coast of the Adriatic Sea for centuries and only lost its independence with the arrival of Napoleon. This region has a number of rivers crossing through it and also produces marvellous wines, like the famous Prosecco. Their link to the sea made Venice & Veneto a rich state, where shipbuilding was one of the main activities. In fact, according to legend, it was possible to build a ship a day in the Arsenale. But the eras of wars and conflicts faded, and the region is now one of Italy’s most famous tourist spots, the city of Venice ranking in first place. The art here is inviting, but if you’re a film lover, you could also take advantage of participating in the Venice International Film Festival, which normally takes place at the end of August.
