Travel GuideLoire Valley
Loire Valley
Stunning landscapes, historic castles and picturesque vineyards dot the hills and lanes of the expansive Loire Valley. Also known as the “Garden of France” for being a fertile land, this destination combines nature with dazzling medieval architecture, which heightens its mystic, nonetheless opulent atmosphere. Therefore, its 280 kilometres (170 miles) of land spanning across the cities of Amboise, Chambord, Chenonceaux and Tours have been recognised, in their entirety, as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Firstly, the Loire boasts several notable landmarks, predominantly châteaux, impressive castle constructions where once the most influential aristocratic families and personalities lived, including the legendary Italian artist, Leonardo da Vinci. Aside from these architectural wonders, the Loire Valley is equally recognised for producing some of the finest French wines. The wine estates are open for visitors to gain an insightful glimpse into France’s demarked winemaking process. Adding to the region’s natural beauty and quaint architecture are the nature reserves and parks, ideal for outdoor activities, namely hiking, cycling and wildlife spotting. Domaine National de Chambord strikes the attention for being one of Europe’s largest walled parks with over 5000 hectares of land. As for food, the Loire Valley’s culinary scene is as impressive, with dishes cooked with fresh local ingredients, including fish from the Loire River, goat cheese and seasonal fruits and vegetables. The rillettes (a type of pâté) and the tarte Tatin (an upside-down caramelised apple tart) are two of the most popular dishes. At its very core, the Loire Valley is a must-visit destination!
