Genoa & the Italian Riviera
The region of Liguria, also known as the Italian Riviera, stretches from the border between the south of France and the north of Italy, close to Ventimiglia and San Remo, passing Genoa and up to approximately Punta Corvo, on the border with Tuscany. This stretch of coast forms a kind of curve, fringed by the Ligurian Sea. The Italian Riviera comprises four provinces in Liguria – Savona, Imperia, Genoa and La Spezia – which span around 330 kilometres. From the border with France until Genoa, the coastline is called the Riviera di Ponente; from Genoa to the border with Tuscany, the area is called Riviera di Levante. The Italian Riviera combines history, unspoilt beaches, breath-taking panoramic views, colourful houses and amazing regional cuisine. The coastline goes up and down, with its winding, vertiginous landscapes, always with the sea as a backdrop. It is along the Riviera di Levante that the famous Cinque Terre can be found, the rocky fishing towns, whose coloured houses can be seen from far out at sea. The idyllic beaches, the caves, the natural isolation and trails with their unbelievable views have also contributed to the famous reputation of the scenic towns, which are classified as UNESCO World Heritage. However, there are similar towns along the rest of the coast, with just the same magical and romantic aura. Portofino, for example, is a charming town that attracts many celebrities. Many of these towns are surrounded by vineyards, which are the origin of the region’s very highly respected wines. Genoa is the central point of the Italian Riviera. It used to be of great maritime importance due to its port, but nowadays it is renowned for its tasty pesto and excellent cuisine in general. Genoa has a great architectural heritage and maintains the coast’s brand image, with its pastel coloured buildings. Make the most of the crystal-clear waters and many sunny days to explore the luxurious mansions and dank churches and gaze at a sunset while sampling a delectable regional wine.
