Sardinia
Sardinia is an island bathed by the Mediterranean Sea, almost parallel to Rome and Naples. With a silent, wild and mountainous interior full of trails, this island is well known for its idyllic, white sandy beaches and sea of a blue more intense than the sky. Walk barefoot through the dunes of Costa Verde, relax in the bays of Costa del Sud, take the coast road to the bay of Cala Luna or dive in the emerald water of Costa Smeralda, where celebrities like to anchor their yachts. Besides being the ideal island for hiking, Sardinia is also the perfect region for anyone who likes water sports. But if that is not your cup of tea, take a boat trip and get to know the wonderful hidden beaches with their transparent waters. The majority of the island’s coast is rocky and inaccessible by land, with gorgeous irregular coves that can only be reached by sea. Further inland, you will see landscapes untouched by humans, woods, deserted areas and animals roaming freely. Those who like mountainous sceneries can always visit the Gennargentu mountain range. Sardinia is also distinctive in its history and culture: the nuraghi are defensive, cone-shaped stone structures from the Bronze Age and are exclusive to the island. Some mediaeval cities are marvellously intact and preserved, such as Cagliari, the island’s capital. It is in the capital that you will find Sardinia’s main art and archaeology museums. The climate on this island is Mediterranean, with a short, mild winter and rather hot summer. The sea water is generally warm during the hotter weather.
