Travel GuideEmilia-Romagna & San Marino
Emilia-Romagna & San Marino
The Po River marks the northern border, whilst the Apennines grace the eastern area of the region. Emilia-Romagna got its name from one of the most important Roman roads, which at the beginning of history connected the Empire’s capital to the north of Europe. It has always been a developed region and currently benefits from the favourable conditions in the Po valley to produce food for a large part of Italy. The region’s cuisine benefits from that: in Emilia-Romagna you can sample the traditional Tagliatelle with Ragù alla Bolognese, enjoy some Parmesan cheese while drinking a glass of Trebbiano or indulge in the magnificent sausages to be found here. Its capital is Bologna, an erudite city that boasts the oldest university in the world. It was at this university that science challenged religion and that medicine gained importance. You will also find other cities in this region that are notable for their history and art: Modena, Parma and Ravenna are a few examples. Apart from cuisine, Italian passion has gained another outlet in the region. If you are a car lover, put your foot down and take the Motor Valley route, which connects Rimini to Piacenza, paying tribute to the most famous makes of Italian cars. Ferrari, Maserati, Ducati and Lamborghini are just a few of the manufacturers and museums you can visit during this trip and, who knows, maybe do the test drive of your dreams. Emilia-Romagna is split between the sea and the countryside. The Riviera Romagnola, which has one of the biggest beaches in Europe, is one of the highlights on the Adriatic coast, while hiking trails and contact with nature await you around Parma and Piacenza. There is a curious thing about this region: it has a country inside it. San Marino is the third smallest country in the world and is located between the Emilia-Romagna and Marche regions. This micro-state offers beautiful mountain landscapes, dotted with mediaeval castles.
